Moiré engineering of 3D vdW materials


Twisted stacking of two-dimensional (2D) van der Waals (vdW) semiconductors has recently opened a new paradigm for controlling quantum states and their light–matter interactions through moiré superlattices. Extending this concept into three dimensions (3D) provides an unexplored opportunity to engineer quantum confinement and optical properties. In this talk, I will present our recent discovery that a simple twist interface between two single-crystalline bulks of hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) forms moiré quantum wells embedded within a 3D vdW architecture. These moiré quantum wells strongly confine charge carriers under both optical excitation and electrical injection, leading to intense deep-ultraviolet (DUV) luminescence in the 215–240 nm spectral range—over an order of magnitude brighter than state-of-the-art conventional multi-quantum-well structures. Remarkably, the emission wavelength and efficiency can be widely tuned by adjusting the twist angle, revealing a new degree of freedom for manipulating radiative recombination processes. Our results establish interfacial twist in 3D vdW materials as a powerful strategy for designing moiré-defined quantum confinement, offering a pathway toward compact, high-efficiency light sources and next-generation DUV optoelectronic devices.
